The epic lightsaber duel of Episode III not only spans several locations, but also covers a range of emotions. Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor are often smiling between takes, since the duel gives them an opportunity to show off their extremely well honed lightsaber skills. When the cameras roll, it's all business, and the two are able to maintain their intensity despite a barrage of distractions. Wind machines blast them, and jets of "steam" obscure their paths. There's more acting involved than just grim faces, though, as there are moments when words cut as deeply as lightsabers.
The usual calls for "quiet on the set" are slightly relaxed for most of the fight, since once Special Effects Supervisor Dave Young starts up his atmospheric devices, the shuffle of the crew is mostly inaudible. For a scene shot on Monday, though, any and all distractions had to minimized to allow Ewan and Hayden to focus on the final moments of Anakin and Obi-Wan's relationship. Ewan asks for anyone not absolutely necessary for the shot to take a few steps from the set. His position on set raises his eye-line so that he can see more of us than usual. "This is a rather important scene here," he explains.
